Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Rural women entrepreneurs play a pivotal role in driving local economies, particularly in underdeveloped regions. In Damboa Local Government Area (LGA), Borno State, rural women are key players in various sectors such as agriculture, retail, and artisanal crafts. However, despite their significant contributions, rural women entrepreneurs often face challenges such as limited access to markets, lack of recognition, and inadequate support from both local authorities and the broader community. Photography, as a visual storytelling tool, offers a unique opportunity to document and showcase the achievements and struggles of these entrepreneurs. By capturing their entrepreneurial activities, challenges, and successes, photography can serve as a powerful tool for raising awareness, advocating for gender equality, and promoting economic empowerment. This study explores the role of photography in highlighting the entrepreneurial efforts of rural women in Damboa LGA, emphasizing its impact on public perception and policy advocacy.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the critical role of women in the economic development of rural communities, women entrepreneurs in Damboa LGA remain largely invisible to both local and national audiences. They often face systemic barriers such as cultural biases, lack of media representation, and inadequate access to resources and opportunities. While there are efforts to support women entrepreneurs, the power of photography in documenting their stories and raising awareness has not been fully explored. This study aims to fill this gap by examining how photography can amplify the voices of rural women entrepreneurs in Damboa LGA, showcasing their businesses and helping to drive social and economic change.
