1.1 Background of the Study
Children’s education is fundamental to the growth and development of any society, but in many rural areas of Nigeria, such as Bali Local Government Area in Taraba State, education for children is often overlooked. Challenges such as poverty, lack of infrastructure, and cultural norms that undervalue education for children, especially girls, hinder educational development. In such contexts, advocacy plays a crucial role in raising awareness about the importance of education and encouraging societal change. Photography, as a compelling visual medium, has the potential to enhance advocacy efforts by capturing and conveying the realities of children’s educational struggles. Through compelling images that depict the daily lives of children in Bali, photography can bring attention to the need for better education infrastructure, resources, and social support. This study aims to explore how photography can be employed in advocacy for children's education in Bali Local Government Area, examining its effectiveness in raising awareness and inspiring action.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognition of education as a fundamental right, Bali Local Government Area faces significant challenges in ensuring access to quality education for children. Traditional beliefs, financial constraints, and inadequate facilities contribute to the low rate of school enrollment and retention. While advocacy efforts have been made, there remains a gap in utilizing visual storytelling to communicate the urgency of the issue. Photography, as a powerful tool, can document the barriers to education and the aspirations of children, amplifying the voices of marginalized communities. This study seeks to investigate how photography can contribute to advocacy for children’s education and bring about positive changes in Bali.
