Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Traditional healing practices are a critical aspect of healthcare in many rural Nigerian communities, where access to modern healthcare services may be limited. In Akwanga Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, traditional healers continue to play a significant role in providing healthcare to local populations. These practices often involve the use of herbal medicine, spiritual healing, and other cultural rituals. Despite their importance, traditional healing practices are at risk of being lost due to modernization, globalization, and a decline in the number of practicing healers. Photography provides a valuable tool for documenting and preserving these ancient practices, capturing the intricacies of healing rituals, the knowledge of practitioners, and the cultural significance of these practices within the community. This study explores the role of photography in documenting traditional healing practices in Akwanga, highlighting how it can contribute to the preservation and appreciation of these vital cultural practices.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

As traditional healing practices in Akwanga face the challenges of modernization and the erosion of cultural heritage, there is a lack of sufficient documentation that could preserve and share these practices for future generations. Despite the rich history of traditional healing, much of the knowledge remains oral and unrecorded. Photography, as a visual documentation tool, offers a way to capture the rich traditions of healing and convey the significance of these practices to a wider audience. However, there has been limited exploration of how photography can be used effectively to preserve and promote traditional healing in Akwanga Local Government Area. This study aims to address this gap by investigating the potential role of photography in documenting these practices.
