ABSTRACT
This study was carried out on the factors influencing the choice of science subjects in secondary schools using some selected secondary schools in Abeokuta North LGA, Ogun State. To achieve this, three significant research objectives were formulated. The survey design was adopted and the simple random sampling techniques were employed in this study. The population size comprises of the students of the 5 selected secondary schools in Abeokuta North LGA, Ogun State. In determining the sample size, the researcher conveniently selected 220 respondents while 215 were received and 210 were validated. Self-constructed and validated questionnaire was used for data collection. The collected and validated questionnaires were analyzed using mean scores. The result of the findings reveals that there are numerous factors influencing student’s choice of Science subjects. Among which include; perception of the value of the subject, the subject teacher, gender-differences, parental influence etc. The findings also revealed that the factors which sustains the interest of students in studying science subjects are; teaching prowess of the teachers, support provided by the teachers etc. In regard to the findings, the study recommends that students should be encouraged to develop a positive commitment to science at a tender age; schools should have well equipped laboratories. Competent and qualified teachers should teach science subjects. Examination council need to ensure that science subjects are assessed fairly; and science teachers need to develop good relationship with students. Science teachers should strive to be enthusiastic, well spoken, knowledgeable, caring, and helpful.
