Background of the Study

Cash flow management is crucial for ensuring the financial health and operational continuity of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). It involves the planning, monitoring, and optimizing of cash inflows and outflows to maintain adequate liquidity for day-to-day operations (Ogundeji & Hassan, 2024). For retail businesses in Kano State, cash flow management plays a vital role in sustaining their growth and competitiveness in the dynamic Nigerian economy. As one of the largest commercial hubs in the country, Kano has a thriving SME sector that relies heavily on efficient cash flow systems.

Retail SMEs in Kano face numerous challenges, including irregular cash inflows, high inventory costs, and fluctuating market demand. Effective cash flow management is essential to address these issues and to mitigate the risk of insolvency. However, poor financial planning, inadequate accounting systems, and limited access to financial tools often hinder their cash flow management capabilities (Adamu et al., 2023). Furthermore, external factors such as inflation, currency fluctuations, and economic instability exacerbate the difficulties faced by these businesses.

Recent reports reveal that cash flow mismanagement is a leading cause of business failure among Nigerian SMEs (World Bank, 2024). Understanding the relationship between cash flow management practices and SME growth in Kano State can provide valuable insights into how retail businesses can optimize their financial performance and enhance their contributions to the local economy.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the significance of cash flow management in ensuring SME sustainability, retail businesses in Kano State continue to struggle with maintaining consistent cash flows. This challenge is compounded by poor financial planning, inadequate cash flow forecasting, and limited access to credit facilities. While previous research has addressed broader financial constraints, there is a lack of focused studies examining the specific impact of cash flow management on the growth of retail SMEs in Kano State. Addressing this gap is crucial to developing practical solutions for improving cash flow practices.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze the current cash flow management practices of retail SMEs in Kano State.

  2. To examine the impact of cash flow management on the growth and sustainability of retail SMEs.

  3. To identify strategies for improving cash flow management practices in retail SMEs in Kano State.

Research Questions

  1. What are the current cash flow management practices used by retail SMEs in Kano State?

  2. How does cash flow management impact the growth and sustainability of retail SMEs in Kano State?

  3. What strategies can enhance cash flow management practices in retail SMEs?

Research Hypotheses

  1. H₀: There is no significant relationship between cash flow management practices and the growth of retail SMEs in Kano State.

  2. H₀: Cash flow forecasting does not significantly affect the financial stability of retail SMEs.

  3. H₀: Access to credit facilities does not significantly influence cash flow management practices in retail SMEs.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on retail SMEs in Kano State, specifically those operating in key commercial areas. The study is limited to examining cash flow management practices and their impact on business growth. Factors such as inflation and external economic conditions, while acknowledged, are not the primary focus of this study. Data collection challenges, such as limited financial disclosures by SMEs, may also affect the study’s findings.
