Background of the Study

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Nigeria contribute significantly to the economy, but many struggle with financial management practices. Effective budgeting is critical for the success and sustainability of SMEs. This study will compare the budgeting practices of SMEs in Kano and Kaduna States to identify similarities, differences, and the factors influencing these practices.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the importance of budgeting in financial planning, many SMEs in Northern Nigeria fail to implement effective budgeting practices, which can lead to cash flow problems, poor financial performance, and eventual closure. This study aims to compare the budgeting practices between SMEs in Kano and Kaduna States to identify which practices contribute to better financial performance.

Aim and Objectives of the Study

Aim: To compare the budgeting practices of SMEs in Kano and Kaduna States and identify the impact of these practices on financial performance.
Objectives:

  1. To examine the budgeting practices used by SMEs in Kano and Kaduna States.
  2. To assess the impact of budgeting practices on the financial performance of SMEs in both states.
  3. To identify the challenges SMEs in Kano and Kaduna States face in budgeting.

Research Questions

  1. What budgeting practices are commonly used by SMEs in Kano and Kaduna States?
  2. How do budgeting practices influence the financial performance of SMEs in these states?
  3. What challenges do SMEs in Kano and Kaduna face in implementing budgeting practices?

Research Hypothesis

  1. H₀: There is no significant difference in the budgeting practices of SMEs in Kano and Kaduna States.
  2. H₀: Budgeting practices do not significantly impact the financial performance of SMEs in Kano and Kaduna States.

Significance of the Study

The findings will provide valuable insights into the budgeting practices that lead to successful financial management in SMEs. The study will also provide recommendations to improve budgeting in SMEs, which can help increase their financial performance and sustainability.

Scope and Limitation of the Study

The study will focus on SMEs operating in Kano and Kaduna States. Limitations may include differences in the types of businesses and challenges in collecting data from all SMEs in the two states.

  • Budgeting Practices: The processes and techniques used by SMEs to plan and allocate financial resources for their operations.
  • SMEs: Small and Medium Enterprises, typically defined as businesses with fewer than 250 employees and annual revenues below a certain threshold.
  • Financial Performance: The measure of a firm's profitability, revenue growth, and overall financial health.
