Background of the Study
Digital media has revolutionized how young people engage with civic issues, providing platforms for information sharing, dialogue, and activism. In Lokoja Local Government Area (LGA), Kogi State, digital media channels such as social media, blogs, and online forums have become critical tools for youth participation in governance and community development. According to Okafor and Adeyemi (2024), digital media fosters civic engagement by increasing access to information, amplifying marginalized voices, and enabling real-time interaction with policymakers. However, challenges such as misinformation, digital divides, and apathy can limit its impact. This study examines the influence of digital media on youth civic engagement in Lokoja LGA, focusing on its benefits, challenges, and transformative potential.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the proliferation of digital media, youth civic engagement in Lokoja LGA remains inconsistent. Factors such as limited digital literacy, unequal access to technology, and the spread of misinformation hinder effective participation. This study seeks to investigate the influence of digital media on youth civic engagement in Lokoja LGA, identifying barriers and opportunities for fostering active citizenship.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the role of digital media in promoting youth civic engagement in Lokoja LGA.

  2. To identify challenges faced by youth in using digital media for civic purposes in Lokoja LGA.

  3. To propose strategies for enhancing youth civic engagement through digital media in Lokoja LGA.

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Digital media significantly promotes youth civic engagement in Lokoja LGA.

  2. Challenges such as misinformation and digital divides limit the effectiveness of digital media in Lokoja LGA.

  3. Implementing digital literacy programs can enhance youth civic engagement in Lokoja LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study provides valuable insights into the transformative potential of digital media in fostering youth civic engagement. The findings will benefit media practitioners, policymakers, and youth organizations in designing strategies to harness digital media for active citizenship.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on the influence of digital media on youth civic engagement within Lokoja LGA, Kogi State. It examines the usage patterns, challenges, and impacts of digital media among young people in the region.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Digital Media: Online platforms and tools used for communication and information sharing.
