Background of the Study
Family planning is a critical component of public health, empowering individuals and families to make informed decisions about reproductive health. In rural areas like Kaiama Local Government Area (LGA), Kwara State, local newspapers serve as a vital medium for disseminating information on family planning. These newspapers provide accessible and culturally relevant content that addresses misconceptions, promotes awareness, and encourages adoption of family planning practices. According to Adebayo and Salami (2023), the media plays an instrumental role in bridging knowledge gaps and influencing attitudes toward reproductive health in rural communities. However, challenges such as low literacy levels, cultural resistance, and limited media reach often hinder the effectiveness of local newspapers. This study examines the role of local newspapers in educating rural women on family planning in Kaiama LGA, exploring their impact, challenges, and opportunities for improvement.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite efforts to promote family planning, rural women in Kaiama LGA often face barriers to accessing accurate information, resulting in low uptake of family planning services. Local newspapers, which could serve as an effective channel for education, are often underutilized due to factors such as limited distribution, cultural resistance, and lack of targeted content. Research by Adetunji and Bello (2024) indicates that the absence of tailored communication strategies significantly affects the adoption of family planning in rural areas. This study investigates the role of local newspapers in addressing these challenges and promoting family planning awareness among rural women in Kaiama LGA.
