The agricultural sector is a vital component of Nigeria's economy, contributing significantly to employment and GDP. However, financial reporting in the sector has been characterized by inconsistencies and a lack of transparency. The adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) seeks to standardize financial reporting practices, potentially transforming the sector’s financial management and decision-making processes.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the adoption of IFRS in Nigeria, the agricultural sector faces challenges in achieving full compliance due to its unique nature and reliance on informal systems. This study seeks to assess the impact of IFRS on financial reporting and operational efficiency in Nigeria’s agricultural sector.

Aim and Objectives of the Study

The aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of IFRS adoption on financial reporting and performance in the agricultural sector in Nigeria.

Specific objectives include:

  1. To assess the level of IFRS compliance in the agricultural sector.
  2. To analyze the impact of IFRS on financial transparency in agricultural firms.
  3. To examine the challenges faced by agricultural firms in implementing IFRS.
  4. To explore the role of IFRS in attracting investment in the agricultural sector.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of IFRS compliance in the Nigerian agricultural sector?
  2. How has IFRS adoption impacted financial transparency in agricultural firms?
  3. What challenges hinder IFRS implementation in the agricultural sector?
  4. Does IFRS adoption influence investment attraction in the agricultural sector?

Research Hypotheses

  1. IFRS adoption significantly improves financial transparency in the Nigerian agricultural sector.
  2. Implementation challenges reduce the effectiveness of IFRS in agricultural firms.

Significance of the Study

This study provides insights into the benefits and challenges of IFRS adoption in agriculture, offering recommendations to policymakers and stakeholders for improving compliance and performance in the sector.
