Background of the Study
Media advocacy has emerged as a critical tool for promoting the rights and inclusion of marginalized groups, including persons with disabilities (PWDs). In Nigeria, persons with disabilities face systemic barriers, including limited access to education, healthcare, employment, and social services. Media outlets play a vital role in shaping public perceptions, influencing policies, and fostering societal inclusion of PWDs. Yola South Local Government Area (LGA) in Adamawa State, like many other regions, has a significant population of persons with disabilities who remain underserved and underrepresented. Studies by Aliyu and Okonkwo (2023) emphasize that media advocacy can amplify the voices of PWDs, highlight their challenges, and advocate for their rights. However, the extent to which media in Yola South LGA effectively advocate for PWDs remains unclear. This study explores the role of media in advocating for the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities in Yola South LGA, assessing their impact and identifying areas for improvement.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing recognition of disability rights in global and national policy frameworks, persons with disabilities in Yola South LGA continue to face discrimination and exclusion. Media, as a powerful tool for advocacy and social change, often fail to prioritize issues affecting PWDs. Research by Musa and Abubakar (2024) indicates that media coverage of disability issues in Nigeria is sporadic and often lacks depth, focusing on charity narratives rather than rights-based approaches. This inadequate representation perpetuates stereotypes and undermines efforts to achieve full inclusion. In Yola South LGA, where cultural and structural barriers further marginalize PWDs, the role of media in advocating for their rights is critical yet understudied. This study aims to address this gap by examining how media in Yola South LGA advocate for persons with disabilities, identifying challenges, and proposing strategies for more effective advocacy.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the role of media in advocating for the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities in Yola South LGA.

  2. To identify the challenges faced by media in promoting disability advocacy in Yola South LGA.

  3. To propose strategies for enhancing media advocacy for persons with disabilities.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. What role does media play in advocating for the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities in Yola South LGA?

  2. What challenges do media face in promoting disability advocacy in Yola South LGA?

  3. What strategies can improve media advocacy for persons with disabilities in Yola South LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Media play a significant role in advocating for the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities in Yola South LGA.

  2. Challenges such as limited resources and societal biases hinder effective media advocacy for persons with disabilities.

  3. Implementing targeted strategies can enhance media advocacy for persons with disabilities in Yola South LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it highlights the potential of media to drive advocacy for persons with disabilities in Yola South LGA. By examining the effectiveness of media advocacy, the study provides valuable insights for media practitioners, disability rights organizations, and policymakers. It emphasizes the need for inclusive and rights-based media narratives that challenge stereotypes and promote societal inclusion. The findings will contribute to the broader discourse on disability rights and media advocacy, offering practical recommendations for improving the representation and inclusion of PWDs in Yola South LGA and beyond.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to the role of media in advocating for persons with disabilities in Yola South LGA, Adamawa State. It focuses on assessing media practices, identifying challenges, and proposing solutions specific to the LGA.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
