Background of the Study

Substance abuse is a pressing issue in many communities, and media plays a vital role in raising awareness, shaping public perceptions, and advocating for solutions. In Lafia LGA, Nasarawa State, the rising rates of drug abuse have led to social, economic, and health challenges. Journalism, through investigative reporting, public service announcements, and educational campaigns, can help inform the public about the dangers of substance abuse and promote preventative measures. This study explores the role of journalism in combating substance abuse in Lafia LGA, focusing on the strategies used by local media outlets to address the issue (Nwachukwu & Taiwo, 2023).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

While substance abuse is a growing concern in Lafia LGA, there are limited efforts to educate the public through journalism on the dangers and preventive measures associated with drug abuse. Journalists face challenges such as insufficient funding for substance abuse awareness programs and the difficulty of reaching vulnerable populations. This study aims to investigate how journalism is being used to combat substance abuse in Lafia and what more can be done to enhance its impact.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the role of journalism in raising awareness about substance abuse in Lafia LGA.

  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of media campaigns and journalistic reporting in combating substance abuse in Lafia LGA.

  3. To identify the challenges faced by journalists in reporting on substance abuse in Lafia LGA.

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Journalism in Lafia LGA plays a significant role in raising awareness about substance abuse.

  2. Media campaigns and journalistic reports are effective in addressing substance abuse in Lafia LGA.

  3. Journalists in Lafia LGA face challenges such as limited resources and access to information when reporting on substance abuse.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant because it explores the potential of journalism in combating substance abuse, an issue that affects many communities. The findings will provide insights into how local media can be better utilized to educate and inform the public about substance abuse and promote healthier behaviors.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on Lafia LGA in Nasarawa State, specifically examining the role of journalism in combating substance abuse. It does not extend to other regions or sectors.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  1. Substance Abuse: The harmful or hazardous use of psychoactive substances, including drugs and alcohol.

  2. Journalism: The activity of gathering, assessing, and presenting news and information to the public through various media platforms.

  3. Lafia LGA: A local government area in Nasarawa State, Nigeria, where the study focuses on journalism's role in addressing substance abuse.
