Background of the Study

Freelance journalism has become increasingly popular as traditional media outlets face financial challenges and journalists seek more autonomy. In Kano Municipal LGA, Kano State, freelance journalists play a significant role in filling the gap left by established media outlets, often covering local news, social issues, and political events. However, freelance journalism comes with numerous challenges, including lack of job security, limited access to resources, and struggles with credibility and recognition. Despite these challenges, freelance journalists continue to contribute significantly to the media landscape, especially in urban centers like Kano (Garba & Yusufu, 2023). This study explores the challenges faced by freelance journalists in Kano Municipal LGA and how they navigate the complexities of their profession.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Freelance journalism in Kano Municipal LGA faces significant challenges, including inadequate financial support, irregular work opportunities, and limited access to training and resources. These challenges hinder the growth and sustainability of freelance journalism as a profession. Additionally, issues related to media ethics, copyright, and the lack of legal protections for freelancers further complicate the situation. This study seeks to investigate the specific challenges freelance journalists face in Kano Municipal LGA and explore ways to improve their working conditions and professional recognition.

The study focuses on freelance journalists in Kano Municipal LGA, Kano State. It does not include journalists from other LGAs or regions, nor does it examine freelance journalists who work in digital or social media platforms exclusively.

  1. Freelance Journalism: Journalism practiced on a self-employed basis, often without long-term contracts with media outlets.
