Background of the Study

Gender-based violence (GBV) remains a persistent issue in Nigeria, with devastating effects on the victims and communities. In Makurdi LGA, Benue State, reports of GBV, including domestic violence, sexual harassment, and female genital mutilation, have been a growing concern for both local authorities and activists. Journalism plays an essential role in raising awareness, educating the public, and advocating for victims' rights. Journalists, through investigative reporting, feature stories, and news coverage, can help expose perpetrators, provide a voice for survivors, and influence policy changes to combat GBV (Aminu & Emmanuel, 2024). This study explores how journalism in Makurdi LGA contributes to addressing gender-based violence and improving awareness of gender equality.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the critical role of journalism in addressing social issues, gender-based violence remains widely underreported, misrepresented, or ignored in some media outlets. In Makurdi LGA, local media coverage of GBV issues has been inconsistent, with insufficient emphasis on the systemic nature of such violence and the need for legal reforms. The study aims to investigate how journalism in Makurdi LGA contributes to tackling gender-based violence, raising awareness, and promoting gender equality, focusing on the strengths and limitations of current media practices.

This study is significant because it highlights the power of journalism in addressing one of the most pressing social issues in Nigeria—gender-based violence. The research will offer valuable insights into how media coverage can bring attention to GBV, advocate for victims, and influence public policy. The findings will be useful to media practitioners, human rights organizations, policymakers, and civil society groups working to combat GBV in Nigeria.
