Background of the Study
Environmental sustainability has become a critical global issue, particularly in regions where natural resources are under threat due to human activity and climate change. In Lafia Local Government Area (LGA) of Nasarawa State, the protection of the environment is a pressing concern due to deforestation, pollution, and unsustainable agricultural practices. Journalists have an important role to play in raising awareness about environmental issues, promoting sustainability, and holding authorities accountable for environmental degradation (Chukwuma & Sulaimon, 2024). Environmental journalism not only involves reporting on ecological issues but also educating the public about sustainable practices, fostering community involvement, and advocating for environmental policies. In Lafia, local journalists have begun to cover topics such as waste management, water conservation, and the effects of climate change on agriculture. This study explores how journalists in Lafia LGA contribute to the promotion of environmental sustainability and the challenges they face in their reporting efforts.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Environmental issues in Lafia LGA have been inadequately addressed, with local media coverage often limited due to resource constraints, lack of environmental expertise, and insufficient training in environmental journalism. While local journalists have reported on various environmental issues, there is limited research on the effectiveness of their coverage in promoting sustainable practices and influencing public policies. The problem also lies in the public’s awareness and engagement with environmental issues, as many community members may be unaware of the long-term consequences of environmental degradation. This study seeks to examine how journalists in Lafia LGA contribute to environmental sustainability and to assess their role in driving community action for the environment.
