Background of the Study

Environmental sustainability has become a critical global issue, particularly in regions where natural resources are under threat due to human activity and climate change. In Lafia Local Government Area (LGA) of Nasarawa State, the protection of the environment is a pressing concern due to deforestation, pollution, and unsustainable agricultural practices. Journalists have an important role to play in raising awareness about environmental issues, promoting sustainability, and holding authorities accountable for environmental degradation (Chukwuma & Sulaimon, 2024). Environmental journalism not only involves reporting on ecological issues but also educating the public about sustainable practices, fostering community involvement, and advocating for environmental policies. In Lafia, local journalists have begun to cover topics such as waste management, water conservation, and the effects of climate change on agriculture. This study explores how journalists in Lafia LGA contribute to the promotion of environmental sustainability and the challenges they face in their reporting efforts.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Environmental issues in Lafia LGA have been inadequately addressed, with local media coverage often limited due to resource constraints, lack of environmental expertise, and insufficient training in environmental journalism. While local journalists have reported on various environmental issues, there is limited research on the effectiveness of their coverage in promoting sustainable practices and influencing public policies. The problem also lies in the public’s awareness and engagement with environmental issues, as many community members may be unaware of the long-term consequences of environmental degradation. This study seeks to examine how journalists in Lafia LGA contribute to environmental sustainability and to assess their role in driving community action for the environment.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the role of journalists in promoting environmental sustainability in Lafia LGA.

  2. To assess the effectiveness of environmental journalism in raising public awareness of environmental issues in Lafia LGA.

  3. To identify the challenges journalists face in reporting on environmental sustainability in Lafia LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. What role do journalists in Lafia LGA play in promoting environmental sustainability?

  2. How effective is environmental journalism in raising public awareness about environmental issues in Lafia LGA?

  3. What challenges do journalists face in promoting environmental sustainability through their reporting in Lafia LGA?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Journalists in Lafia LGA play a significant role in promoting environmental sustainability.

  2. Environmental journalism in Lafia LGA is effective in raising public awareness of environmental issues.

  3. Journalists face significant challenges, such as lack of resources and expertise, in promoting environmental sustainability in Lafia LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant because it highlights the critical role of journalists in fostering environmental awareness and promoting sustainable practices in Lafia LGA. The findings will be useful for media practitioners, policymakers, and environmental advocates in understanding how local journalism can be used to drive positive environmental change. By identifying the challenges faced by journalists, the study will contribute to developing strategies to improve environmental reporting, ensuring that it leads to meaningful community action and sustainable environmental practices.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on environmental journalism within Lafia LGA, Nasarawa State. The research is limited to the reporting practices of local journalists and does not extend to the broader environmental policies at the state or national level.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
