Background of the Study

Development journalism refers to media practices that focus on issues of social development, particularly in underrepresented areas. Its primary goal is to inform, educate, and empower communities through accurate reporting on issues such as health, education, economic development, and literacy. In Gombe Local Government Area (LGA) of Gombe State, where challenges related to education and literacy remain prominent, development journalism has become an essential tool in promoting literacy initiatives. Gombe LGA has seen efforts from various governmental and non-governmental organizations to improve literacy rates, yet barriers such as access to quality education, inadequate infrastructure, and socio-cultural factors persist (Adamu & Usman, 2024). The role of local media in highlighting these challenges and reporting on educational reforms can influence public opinion, mobilize support for literacy programs, and encourage community involvement in educational activities. This study aims to explore the effectiveness of development journalism in promoting literacy within Gombe LGA, focusing on how media coverage can contribute to increasing literacy awareness and improving educational outcomes.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the significant efforts to improve literacy in Gombe LGA, the region continues to face a high illiteracy rate, especially among rural populations and marginalized groups. While development journalism has the potential to bridge the information gap, there is limited research on its specific role in promoting literacy in the region. Local media outlets often lack the resources and expertise to focus extensively on education-related issues, and the challenge of reaching remote or underserved communities remains a significant barrier. Furthermore, the effectiveness of development journalism in engaging the public and influencing literacy outcomes has not been adequately assessed. This study seeks to explore the challenges and opportunities for development journalism in promoting literacy in Gombe LGA and to measure its impact on local educational initiatives.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the role of development journalism in promoting literacy in Gombe LGA.

  2. To assess the impact of local media coverage on literacy awareness and educational participation in Gombe LGA.

  3. To identify challenges and propose solutions for enhancing the effectiveness of development journalism in promoting literacy in Gombe LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. What role does development journalism play in promoting literacy in Gombe LGA?

  2. How does local media coverage influence literacy awareness and educational participation in Gombe LGA?

  3. What challenges hinder the effectiveness of development journalism in promoting literacy in Gombe LGA?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Development journalism positively influences literacy awareness and educational participation in Gombe LGA.

  2. Local media coverage significantly impacts the public’s understanding of literacy issues in Gombe LGA.

  3. Limited resources and lack of community engagement hinder the effectiveness of development journalism in promoting literacy in Gombe LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant because it highlights the potential of development journalism to address educational challenges in Gombe LGA. The findings will be useful for media practitioners, policymakers, and educators in understanding the role of media in promoting literacy and education. By identifying the challenges and opportunities for media engagement, the research will help to improve the effectiveness of development journalism in the region. Moreover, the study’s recommendations can contribute to more effective public health and education campaigns, fostering a more literate and informed society in Gombe LGA.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on the role of development journalism in promoting literacy within Gombe LGA, Gombe State. The research is limited to local media outlets and their coverage of literacy issues, and it does not extend to other regions or educational policies at the state or national level.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
