Background of the Study
Public health issues, particularly in conflict-affected regions such as Maiduguri Metropolitan Local Government Area (LGA) in Borno State, require comprehensive media coverage to ensure effective awareness, response, and prevention. The media, as a vital channel of communication, plays a critical role in disseminating information about health risks, preventive measures, and available healthcare services. In Maiduguri, which has faced years of conflict due to insurgency, public health challenges are compounded by infrastructure limitations, displacement, and economic hardship. The media’s role in highlighting these challenges, providing timely information, and fostering public health campaigns is more crucial than ever. Despite these challenges, local media outlets have increasingly become instrumental in informing the public about diseases, vaccinations, mental health, and hygiene practices, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and other health emergencies (Ali & Musa, 2023). However, there remains a gap in understanding how well local media addresses public health issues in Maiduguri, and whether the coverage adequately reaches vulnerable populations. This study aims to investigate the role of local media in covering public health issues in Maiduguri Metropolitan LGA and assess its impact on public health outcomes in the region.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The coverage of public health issues by local media in Maiduguri has been challenged by a variety of factors, including limited resources, safety concerns, and the complexity of reporting in a conflict zone. Local media outlets often struggle to provide comprehensive and accurate information, particularly when it comes to highly technical public health issues or when there are security risks involved in reporting. Moreover, the content produced may not always resonate with or reach the most affected communities, particularly those who are internally displaced or in remote areas. Although media plays an essential role in influencing public health behaviors, there is limited research on how local media coverage in Maiduguri addresses the unique public health challenges of the region. This gap in knowledge makes it difficult to assess the effectiveness of local media in informing the public about health risks and promoting better health practices. This study seeks to fill this gap by examining how local media in Maiduguri covers public health issues and exploring the challenges and opportunities for improving public health communication.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it provides a deeper understanding of how local media in Maiduguri addresses public health issues in a context marked by conflict and crisis. The findings will contribute to improving the effectiveness of public health communication by identifying strengths, weaknesses, and gaps in local media coverage. Moreover, the study’s insights will be valuable for health organizations, policymakers, and journalists seeking to enhance public health campaigns in conflict zones. By examining the impact of local media on public health awareness and behaviors, the research underscores the importance of strategic media interventions in improving public health outcomes in regions like Maiduguri. Ultimately, this study aims to contribute to better-informed communities that are empowered to make healthier decisions and respond effectively to public health crises.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
