Background of the Study
Journalism plays a pivotal role in conflict resolution by providing accurate information, promoting dialogue, and fostering understanding among diverse groups. In Jos North Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State, a region historically marked by ethno-religious tensions, journalism has the potential to mitigate conflicts and build bridges between communities. By disseminating unbiased information and amplifying voices advocating for peace, journalists contribute to breaking cycles of misinformation and mistrust that often fuel conflicts. Studies show that conflict-sensitive reporting can reduce violence, promote reconciliation, and enhance community resilience (Yakubu & Danjuma, 2023). However, journalism in conflict zones faces numerous challenges, including safety risks, limited resources, and the pressure to align with partisan interests. Despite these hurdles, many journalists in Jos North LGA have taken proactive steps to advocate for peace, leveraging the media’s power to shape narratives and influence public opinion. This study explores the role of journalism in conflict resolution within Jos North LGA, emphasizing the importance of ethical reporting, media literacy, and collaboration among stakeholders.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The recurring conflicts in Jos North LGA have resulted in loss of lives, displacement of communities, and socio-economic setbacks. While journalism has the potential to serve as a catalyst for peace, its role in conflict resolution within the region remains underutilized. Journalists often struggle to navigate the delicate balance between reporting facts and avoiding the escalation of tensions. Furthermore, the lack of training in conflict-sensitive reporting and the prevalence of sensationalist narratives undermine the media’s ability to foster peace. Despite these challenges, there is limited empirical research on how journalism contributes to conflict resolution in Jos North LGA. This gap hinders efforts to harness the media's potential in promoting understanding and reconciliation. This study seeks to examine the role of journalism in resolving conflicts in Jos North LGA, identifying barriers and proposing strategies to enhance its impact.
