Background of the Study
Journalism, as a profession, has long been viewed as a vehicle for social change and an avenue for amplifying diverse voices. However, the participation of women in journalism is often fraught with challenges, particularly in regions like Gusau Local Government Area (LGA) of Zamfara State, where socio-cultural norms and gender disparities influence the profession. Female journalists in Gusau LGA face a unique set of obstacles, including workplace discrimination, limited career advancement opportunities, and societal stigmatization. These challenges are compounded by safety concerns and the lack of institutional support for women in the media industry. Recent studies emphasize that gender-based barriers not only hinder the professional growth of female journalists but also deprive communities of diverse perspectives in media reporting (Adamu & Yusuf, 2023). Moreover, the underrepresentation of women in journalism weakens the potential of the media to serve as a tool for empowerment and advocacy. Despite these constraints, many female journalists continue to break barriers and make significant contributions to the field. This study aims to explore the challenges facing female journalists in Gusau LGA, shedding light on their experiences and proposing strategies to foster gender equity in the profession.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Female journalists in Gusau LGA encounter systemic challenges that limit their participation and effectiveness in the media industry. Cultural expectations and gender norms often discourage women from pursuing careers in journalism, while those who do face harassment, unequal pay, and limited access to leadership positions. The safety of female journalists is another critical concern, with many experiencing threats and violence in the course of their work. Despite the importance of addressing these issues, there is limited research on the specific challenges faced by female journalists in Gusau LGA and the strategies required to overcome them. This gap hinders efforts to create an inclusive and supportive media environment for women in the region. This study seeks to examine the barriers faced by female journalists in Gusau LGA and propose actionable solutions to address these challenges.
