Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Climate change is a global phenomenon with far-reaching consequences, and its effects are particularly evident in vulnerable regions like Potiskum Local Government Area, Yobe State. Photography has emerged as a critical tool for documenting and communicating the visible impacts of climate change, such as desertification, flooding, and loss of biodiversity. Visual evidence captured through photography not only raises awareness but also serves as a call to action for policymakers and stakeholders. According to Musa and Abdullahi (2023), photographic documentation in Yobe State has highlighted the severity of climate-related challenges, prompting local and international interventions. Despite its potential, the strategic use of photography to capture and communicate climate change effects remains underutilized in Potiskum. This study explores the role of photography in documenting and addressing climate change impacts in the area.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Potiskum is experiencing significant climate change effects, including irregular rainfall patterns, soil erosion, and declining agricultural productivity. However, the lack of visual documentation hampers efforts to communicate the urgency of these issues to a broader audience. Photography, as a medium for advocacy and education, is not widely employed in Potiskum, leaving a gap in the visual representation of the region's climate challenges. Existing studies often focus on scientific data, neglecting the power of visual storytelling in driving environmental action (Ali & Tukur, 2024). This study aims to address this gap by investigating the role of photography in capturing and communicating climate change effects in Potiskum.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
1. To examine the role of photography in documenting climate change effects in Potiskum.
2. To identify challenges faced by photographers in capturing climate-related changes.
3. To propose strategies for enhancing the use of photography in climate change advocacy.
1.4 Research Questions
1. How does photography contribute to documenting climate change effects in Potiskum?
2. What challenges do photographers face in capturing climate-related changes?
3. What strategies can improve the use of photography in climate change advocacy?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
1. H₁: Photography significantly contributes to documenting climate change effects in Potiskum.
2. H₂: Photographers face substantial challenges in capturing climate-related changes.
3. H₃: Strategic interventions can enhance the role of photography in climate change advocacy.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study highlights the potential of photography as a tool for climate change advocacy in Potiskum, offering insights for environmentalists, photographers, and policymakers. By addressing challenges and proposing solutions, the study contributes to the academic discourse on visual communication and environmental action.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on the role of photography in capturing climate change effects in Potiskum Local Government Area, Yobe State. It excludes other forms of environmental communication and is limited to the climate challenges in Potiskum.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
1. Photography: The use of images to document and communicate environmental changes.
2. Climate Change: Long-term changes in temperature, precipitation, and weather patterns.
3. Advocacy: Efforts aimed at raising awareness and prompting action on environmental issues.
