Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Photography has become a vital tool for promoting public engagement with local markets, showcasing their vibrancy, diversity, and cultural significance. In Sabon Gari Local Government Area, Kaduna State, photography is used to highlight market activities, from the display of goods to the interactions between traders and buyers. Visual storytelling through photography can attract visitors, boost market patronage, and preserve cultural heritage. According to Yakubu and Ali (2024), market photography in Sabon Gari serves as a bridge between tradition and modernity, promoting local commerce while celebrating cultural identity. However, the impact of photography on public engagement with local markets remains underexplored, necessitating further research.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the cultural and economic significance of local markets in Sabon Gari, they often suffer from low visibility and engagement. Photography, as a promotional tool, is underutilized due to limited awareness, expertise, and resources. Existing research often overlooks the role of photography in enhancing public engagement with local markets, creating a gap in understanding its potential impact (Abubakar & Tunde, 2023). This study addresses this gap by examining the effect of photography on public engagement with local markets in Sabon Gari.
