Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Storytelling has long been a cornerstone of community identity and cohesion, providing a means for preserving history, culture, and shared values. Photography, as a visual storytelling medium, has become an increasingly influential tool in capturing and conveying the essence of community life. In Wukari Local Government Area, Taraba State, photography serves as a vital means of documenting community narratives, from traditional ceremonies to everyday life. According to Abubakar and Yakubu (2024), photography enhances community storytelling by providing a visual record that resonates with both local and global audiences. It bridges generational gaps, enabling younger members of the community to connect with their heritage while presenting an authentic portrayal of Wukari's culture to the outside world. However, the potential of photography in community storytelling is often underutilized due to challenges such as limited access to equipment, lack of professional training, and insufficient recognition of its value. This study explores how photography contributes to community storytelling in Wukari, examining its impact on cultural preservation and social cohesion.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite its potential to enrich community storytelling, photography in Wukari faces challenges such as inadequate resources, limited expertise, and underappreciation of its cultural significance. These issues hinder the ability of photography to effectively document and promote Wukari’s rich cultural narratives. Previous studies have focused primarily on oral storytelling and textual documentation, leaving a gap in understanding the role of visual storytelling in this context (Bello & Musa, 2023). This study addresses this gap by investigating the use of photography in community storytelling in Wukari.
