Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Elections are a cornerstone of democratic governance, and their coverage plays a critical role in informing the public, ensuring transparency, and promoting civic engagement. Photography, as a visual medium, enhances election coverage by capturing moments that define the electoral process, such as voter turnout, campaign events, and election day activities. In Ilorin East Local Government Area, Kwara State, photography has been used to document elections, providing visual evidence that fosters accountability and public trust. According to Adewale and Musa (2023), photography in election coverage serves as a tool for transparency, helping to highlight irregularities and celebrate milestones in the democratic process. Despite its importance, the use of photography in election coverage in Ilorin East faces challenges such as limited access to professional photographers, inadequate training, and restrictions on media access. This study explores the role of photography in election coverage, focusing on its impact, challenges, and potential for enhancing democratic practices in Ilorin East.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

While photography can significantly enhance election coverage by promoting transparency and accountability, its application in Ilorin East is constrained by challenges such as lack of resources, limited expertise, and media restrictions. These issues hinder the ability of photography to effectively document and communicate the electoral process.
