Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Historical monuments are invaluable assets that serve as physical embodiments of cultural heritage, history, and identity. Preserving these monuments is crucial for maintaining the historical continuity of communities and fostering cultural pride. Photography has emerged as a vital tool in documenting, preserving, and promoting historical monuments, especially in areas like Kaltungo Local Government Area, Gombe State. In recent years, photographers and cultural enthusiasts have increasingly used visual documentation to capture the intricate details, stories, and significance of these monuments. According to Adamu and Yusuf (2024), photography not only creates a permanent record of historical structures but also raises awareness about their importance, encouraging preservation efforts. Despite its potential, the use of photography in this domain faces challenges such as lack of funding, inadequate expertise, and limited public awareness. This study explores the role of photography in preserving historical monuments in Kaltungo, focusing on its impact, challenges, and opportunities for improvement.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

While historical monuments in Kaltungo hold immense cultural and historical significance, many are at risk of degradation due to neglect, environmental factors, and urbanization. Photography, as a preservation tool, has not been fully leveraged to document and promote these monuments. The absence of comprehensive photographic archives and the limited use of photography in awareness campaigns hinder the effective preservation of these cultural assets. Existing studies often overlook the role of photography in cultural preservation, focusing instead on textual documentation (Bello & Musa, 2023). This study addresses this gap by examining the use of photography in preserving historical monuments in Kaltungo.
