Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Photography has evolved as a dynamic tool for engaging youth in community development initiatives, serving as a medium for creative expression, advocacy, and documentation. In Gombe Local Government Area, Gombe State, photography enables young people to capture and share stories about their communities, fostering awareness and inspiring action. According to Bello and Musa (2024), photography empowers youth to highlight social issues, celebrate cultural heritage, and advocate for change. However, despite its potential, the role of photography in youth engagement in community development in Gombe remains underutilized due to challenges such as limited access to training, inadequate resources, and minimal public appreciation for the medium. This study explores the influence of photography on youth engagement in community development, emphasizing its contributions, challenges, and opportunities for growth in Gombe.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Although photography has the potential to enhance youth engagement in community development, its impact in Gombe is limited by challenges such as lack of training opportunities, inadequate resources, and minimal support for youth-led initiatives. These barriers hinder the ability of photography to effectively contribute to community development efforts. While studies have explored the role of media in youth engagement, limited research focuses specifically on photography in Gombe (Ahmed & Yusuf, 2023). This study addresses this gap by analyzing the influence of photography on youth engagement in community development.
