Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Wedding photography has become an integral part of cultural expression, capturing the essence of traditional attire, ceremonies, and values. In Sokoto North Local Government Area, Sokoto State, wedding photography serves as a visual archive that preserves and promotes cultural identity. Through the lens of photographers, moments of cultural significance, such as traditional attire, rituals, and symbols, are documented and shared, reinforcing a sense of identity and continuity. According to Ahmed and Musa (2023), wedding photography not only celebrates individual unions but also showcases the richness of cultural heritage. However, the influence of wedding photography on cultural identity in Sokoto North remains underexplored, particularly in the context of modern influences and digital sharing. This study examines the role of wedding photography in shaping and promoting cultural identity, focusing on its contributions, challenges, and implications.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

While wedding photography plays a critical role in documenting cultural identity, its potential is often undermined by challenges such as the dominance of modern aesthetics, limited access to professional photographers, and the lack of emphasis on traditional elements. These issues threaten the ability of wedding photography to authentically represent cultural heritage. Although studies have explored the role of photography in cultural preservation, limited research focuses specifically on wedding photography in Sokoto North (Bello & Yusuf, 2024). This study addresses this gap by evaluating the influence of wedding photography on cultural identity.

The findings contribute to academic literature on cultural preservation, emphasizing the role of visual documentation in fostering cultural pride and continuity. Additionally, the study provides practical recommendations for overcoming challenges and enhancing the representation of cultural identity in wedding photography.
