Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Photography has emerged as a compelling medium for raising environmental awareness, offering visual narratives that inspire action and foster a deeper understanding of environmental challenges. In Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, Borno State, photography is increasingly utilized to highlight issues such as deforestation, desertification, waste management, and urban pollution. By capturing the beauty of natural landscapes and the consequences of environmental degradation, photographers play a critical role in advocating for sustainable practices and environmental conservation. According to Musa and Abdullahi (2023), photography bridges the gap between complex environmental issues and public comprehension, making it a powerful tool for advocacy and education. However, the extent to which photography contributes to environmental awareness in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council remains underexplored, particularly in the context of local environmental challenges and community engagement. This study investigates the role of photography in promoting environmental awareness, focusing on its impact, challenges, and opportunities for enhancing its effectiveness.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the potential of photography to raise environmental awareness, its application in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council faces significant challenges, including limited access to professional photographers, inadequate platforms for showcasing environmental photography, and a lack of public appreciation for its advocacy role. These barriers hinder the ability of photography to effectively convey environmental messages and inspire action. While studies have explored the role of media in environmental advocacy, limited research focuses specifically on photography in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (Bello & Yusuf, 2024). This study addresses this gap by evaluating the contributions and challenges of photography as a tool for environmental awareness.

1. H₁: Photography significantly contributes to promoting environmental awareness in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council.

2. H₂: Challenges such as limited access to professional photographers negatively affect the use of photography for environmental advocacy.

3. H₃: Strategic interventions enhance the effectiveness of photography in raising environmental awareness.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it highlights the potential of photography as a tool for environmental advocacy, offering valuable insights for environmentalists, photographers, and policymakers in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council. The findings contribute to academic literature on environmental communication, emphasizing the role of visual media in fostering environmental awareness and action. Additionally, the study provides practical recommendations for overcoming challenges and enhancing the use of photography in environmental advocacy, promoting sustainable practices and conservation efforts.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on the role of photography in promoting environmental awareness in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, Borno State. It excludes other forms of environmental advocacy and focuses specifically on photography. Limitations may include variations in photographic quality and access to data on its impact on public awareness.
