Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Mobile apps have become indispensable tools for enhancing attendee engagement at events, offering features such as real-time updates, interactive maps, and feedback mechanisms. In Gombe Local Government Area, Gombe State, the adoption of mobile apps in event planning has gained traction, particularly in large-scale gatherings such as festivals, conferences, and community celebrations. These apps facilitate seamless communication between organizers and attendees, improving the overall event experience. According to Ahmed and Bello (2023), mobile apps enhance engagement by providing personalized content, enabling networking opportunities, and fostering interactive participation. However, the effectiveness of mobile apps in Gombe is often hindered by challenges such as limited digital literacy, inadequate internet infrastructure, and high development costs. This study explores the role of mobile apps in enhancing attendee engagement at events in Gombe, focusing on their impact, challenges, and potential solutions.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the growing adoption of mobile apps in event planning, their effectiveness in enhancing attendee engagement in Gombe is often constrained by issues such as low digital literacy, limited smartphone penetration, and unreliable internet connectivity. These challenges undermine the potential of mobile apps to transform the event experience. While studies have explored the role of technology in event management, limited research focuses specifically on the use of mobile apps in Gombe Local Government Area (Abubakar & Yusuf, 2024). This study addresses this gap by evaluating the role of mobile apps in enhancing attendee engagement.

1. H₁: Mobile apps significantly enhance attendee engagement at events in Gombe.

2. H₂: Challenges such as low digital literacy negatively affect the effectiveness of mobile apps.

3. H₃: Strategic interventions optimize the use of mobile apps in enhancing attendee engagement.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it underscores the potential of mobile apps to transform attendee engagement at events, providing valuable insights for event organizers, app developers, and policymakers in Gombe. The findings contribute to academic literature on technology in event management, emphasizing the importance of digital tools in enhancing participation. Additionally, the study offers practical recommendations for overcoming challenges and maximizing the benefits of mobile apps in event planning.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on the role of mobile apps in enhancing attendee engagement at events in Gombe Local Government Area, Gombe State. It excludes other technological tools and focuses specifically on mobile apps. Limitations may include variations in app features and access to data on attendee engagement.
