Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Accessibility has become a crucial consideration in event planning, with technology playing a transformative role in improving experiences for people with disabilities. In Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, Borno State, events often face challenges in ensuring inclusivity for individuals with physical, sensory, or cognitive disabilities. Technological advancements, such as assistive devices, mobile applications, and real-time translation tools, have revolutionized the way events cater to diverse needs. According to Ibrahim and Yusuf (2024), integrating technology into event planning not only enhances accessibility but also fosters inclusivity, ensuring that everyone can participate fully. However, the adoption of such technologies in Maiduguri remains inconsistent, with limited awareness and resources impeding progress. This study explores the role of technology in enhancing accessibility for people with disabilities at events in Maiduguri, highlighting its impact, challenges, and potential solutions.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite global advancements in accessible event planning, many events in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council fail to adequately address the needs of people with disabilities. Challenges such as lack of awareness, insufficient funding, and inadequate technological infrastructure hinder the implementation of inclusive practices. While studies have explored the role of technology in accessibility, limited research focuses on its application in the context of events in Maiduguri (Abubakar & Musa, 2023). This study addresses this gap by evaluating the role of technology in enhancing accessibility for people with disabilities at events in Maiduguri.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

1. To examine the role of technology in enhancing accessibility for people with disabilities at events in Maiduguri.

2. To identify challenges affecting the implementation of accessible technologies at events.

3. To propose strategies for improving accessibility through technology at events in Maiduguri.

1.4 Research Questions

1. How does technology enhance accessibility for people with disabilities at events in Maiduguri?

2. What challenges affect the implementation of accessible technologies at events?

3. What strategies can improve accessibility through technology at events in Maiduguri?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

1. H₁: Technology significantly enhances accessibility for people with disabilities at events in Maiduguri.

2. H₂: Challenges such as inadequate resources negatively affect the implementation of accessible technologies.

3. H₃: Strategic integration of technology improves accessibility for people with disabilities at events.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it provides insights into the role of technology in enhancing accessibility for people with disabilities, offering valuable recommendations for event organizers, policymakers, and advocacy groups in Maiduguri. The findings contribute to academic literature on accessible event planning, emphasizing the importance of inclusive practices. Additionally, the study underscores the potential of technology to transform event experiences, promoting equality and participation for people with disabilities.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on the role of technology in enhancing accessibility for people with disabilities at events in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, Borno State. It excludes other aspects of event planning and focuses specifically on accessibility-related technologies. Limitations may include variations in technological adoption and access to data on event inclusivity.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

1. Accessibility: The extent to which events are designed to accommodate the needs of people with disabilities.

2. Assistive Technology: Tools and devices that enhance the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities.
