Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Religious events such as conventions, crusades, and festivals play a significant role in fostering family reunification and social cohesion. In Makurdi Local Government Area, Benue State, religious events often serve as platforms for spiritual renewal, community bonding, and family reconciliation. According to Udeh and Oche (2023), religious events provide opportunities for families to come together, resolve conflicts, and strengthen relationships. These events also promote shared values and collective identity, contributing to social harmony. However, challenges such as logistical constraints, financial barriers, and interfaith tensions can affect the effectiveness of religious events in promoting family reunification. This study evaluates the impact of religious events on family reunification, focusing on their benefits, challenges, and implications in Makurdi.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the potential of religious events to foster family reunification, their impact is often limited by challenges such as inadequate planning, financial constraints, and lack of inclusivity. These issues can hinder the ability of religious events to bring families together and address underlying conflicts. While studies have explored the social impact of religious events, limited research focuses on their specific role in family reunification in Makurdi (Eze & Agbo, 2024). This study seeks to address this gap by evaluating the impact of religious events on family reunification in Makurdi Local Government Area.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the impact of religious events on family reunification in Makurdi.

2. To identify challenges affecting the role of religious events in fostering family unity.

3. To propose strategies for enhancing the role of religious events in family reunification.

1.4 Research Questions

1. What is the impact of religious events on family reunification in Makurdi?

2. What challenges affect the role of religious events in fostering family unity?

3. What strategies can enhance the role of religious events in family reunification?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

1. H₁: Religious events significantly promote family reunification in Makurdi.

2. H₂: Challenges such as financial barriers negatively affect the role of religious events.

3. H₃: Strategic planning enhances the impact of religious events on family reunification.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it highlights the role of religious events in promoting family reunification, providing valuable insights for religious leaders, event organizers, and policymakers in Makurdi. The findings contribute to academic literature on social cohesion and religious practices, offering practical recommendations for enhancing the impact of religious events. Additionally, the study underscores the importance of inclusivity and effective planning in religious event management.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on the impact of religious events on family reunification in Makurdi Local Government Area, Benue State. It excludes other social impacts of religious events and focuses specifically on family reunification. Limitations may include variations in religious practices and access to data on family participation.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

1. Religious Events: Gatherings organized for spiritual, cultural, or social purposes.

2. Family Reunification: The process of bringing family members together to strengthen relationships.

3. Social Cohesion: The degree of social harmony and unity within a community.
