Background of the Study

Agricultural tax policies are crucial in shaping the economic environment for rural farmers. In Tarka LGA, agricultural policies play a pivotal role in determining the income levels, productivity, and sustainability of smallholder farmers. While taxes are necessary for generating revenue for public goods and services, overly burdensome tax policies can negatively impact agricultural productivity by reducing farmers' disposable income and investment in farming activities.

This study seeks to assess the effects of agricultural tax policies on rural farmers in Tarka LGA, focusing on how these policies influence their economic conditions, productivity, and overall livelihoods. Understanding these effects will help policymakers create more farmer-friendly tax policies that can boost agricultural growth while ensuring sufficient revenue generation for local governments.

Statement of the Problem

Agricultural tax policies in Tarka LGA may not be effectively supporting rural farmers, either due to their design or implementation. This study investigates the effects of agricultural tax policies on the economic well-being of rural farmers in Tarka LGA and offers insights into improving these policies.

Aim and Objectives of the Study

Aim: To assess the effect of agricultural tax policies on rural farmers in Tarka LGA.
Objectives:

  1. To evaluate the impact of agricultural tax policies on the income of rural farmers in Tarka LGA.

  2. To analyze the effect of these tax policies on the productivity and growth of smallholder farms.

  3. To recommend improvements to agricultural tax policies to enhance farmers' economic conditions.

Research Questions

  1. What is the effect of agricultural tax policies on the income of rural farmers in Tarka LGA?

  2. How do agricultural tax policies impact the productivity of rural farmers?

  3. What changes can be made to agricultural tax policies to improve the economic situation of rural farmers?

Research Hypothesis

  1. H₀: Agricultural tax policies do not significantly affect the income of rural farmers in Tarka LGA.

  2. H₀: Agricultural tax policies do not significantly affect the productivity of smallholder farms in Tarka LGA.

  3. H₀: Improvements to agricultural tax policies will not lead to better economic conditions for farmers in Tarka LGA.

Significance of the Study

The study will provide valuable information on how agricultural tax policies impact rural farmers, offering policymakers insights on designing tax policies that support farmers' productivity and economic well-being.

Scope and Limitation of the Study

The study focuses on the impact of agricultural tax policies on rural farmers in Tarka LGA. Limitations include potential difficulty in isolating the impact of tax policies from other factors affecting farmers' livelihoods.

Definition of Terms
