Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Event logistics is a critical component of successful event planning, encompassing aspects such as transportation, accommodation, resource allocation, and communication. Efficient logistics not only ensure the smooth execution of events but also significantly influence the experience and satisfaction of participants, including volunteers. In Ilorin West Local Government Area (LGA), Kwara State, where community events often rely on volunteers for execution, the importance of well-organized logistics cannot be overstated.
Volunteers form the backbone of many community events, contributing their time, skills, and energy to support various initiatives. However, retaining volunteers for future events often hinges on their experience during previous engagements. Poor logistics, such as lack of clear communication, inadequate provisions for transportation and meals, and disorganized schedules, can lead to volunteer dissatisfaction and attrition (Adeyemi & Musa, 2023). Conversely, effective logistical planning can enhance volunteer motivation, foster a sense of belonging, and encourage continued participation.
This study investigates how event logistics impact volunteer retention in Ilorin West LGA, focusing on key logistical elements that contribute to volunteer satisfaction and long-term engagement.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Volunteer retention is a persistent challenge in event management, particularly in community-driven initiatives where resources are limited. In Ilorin West LGA, many volunteers report dissatisfaction with logistical arrangements, citing issues such as unclear roles, poor communication, and lack of support during events. These shortcomings not only affect the immediate success of events but also discourage volunteers from participating in future initiatives. Despite the critical role of logistics in shaping volunteer experiences, there is limited research on its impact on volunteer retention in the context of Ilorin West LGA. This study aims to fill this gap by assessing the relationship between event logistics and volunteer retention, providing actionable insights for event organizers.
