1.1 Background of the Study
Political ownership of media has long been a contentious issue in the journalism profession, influencing media content, credibility, and public perception. In Birnin Kebbi LGA, Kebbi State, where political affiliations often intersect with media ownership, the objectivity of news reporting is frequently questioned. Politically owned media outlets often reflect the biases of their owners, shaping public narratives and reinforcing partisan divides (Ahmed & Bello, 2024). This phenomenon raises concerns about the ability of the media to fulfill its watchdog role and provide unbiased information. Understanding the effects of political ownership on public perception is essential for assessing media credibility and its role in fostering informed citizenship in Birnin Kebbi LGA.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The concentration of media ownership in the hands of politically affiliated individuals or groups in Birnin Kebbi LGA undermines public trust in the media. Biased reporting and selective coverage contribute to misinformation and polarization among the public. Despite these challenges, limited research exists on the specific effects of political ownership of media on public perception in the region. This study aims to fill this gap by analyzing the relationship between media ownership and public trust in Birnin Kebbi LGA.
