1.1 Background of the Study
Community-based journalism serves as a vital tool for addressing local issues and advocating for social change. In Keffi LGA, Nasarawa State, education advocacy is a critical area where community-based journalism can influence policy decisions and raise awareness among stakeholders. This form of journalism focuses on localized issues, making it accessible and relevant to the immediate community. Education in Keffi LGA faces challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, teacher shortages, and low enrollment rates, particularly among girls. Community-based journalists have the capacity to highlight these issues, amplify the voices of affected residents, and mobilize community efforts toward solutions (Abdullahi & Musa, 2024). By leveraging platforms such as community radio, local newspapers, and digital channels, these journalists create a bridge between policymakers, educators, and the community, fostering accountability and collective action.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite its potential, community-based journalism in Keffi LGA is underutilized in advocating for educational reforms. Challenges such as limited resources, lack of training in advocacy reporting, and political interference hinder its effectiveness. Additionally, there is insufficient empirical data on how community-based journalism contributes to education advocacy in the region. This study investigates the role of community-based journalism in promoting educational development, identifying barriers and proposing strategies for improvement.
