1.1 Background of the Study
Investigative journalism, known for its in-depth and systematic approach to uncovering hidden issues, plays a critical role in promoting governance transparency and accountability. In Yola East LGA, Adamawa State, where governance challenges such as corruption, nepotism, and inefficiency persist, investigative journalism serves as a tool for exposing misconduct and advocating for reform. By providing factual, evidence-based reporting, investigative journalists help to hold public officials accountable and empower citizens with information necessary for civic engagement (Musa & Ibrahim, 2024). However, investigative journalism in the region faces challenges such as limited access to information, threats to journalists’ safety, and lack of financial resources (Abubakar & Garba, 2023). This study explores the influence of investigative journalism on governance transparency in Yola East LGA, assessing its impact and the obstacles faced by practitioners.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the potential of investigative journalism to promote transparency, its influence in Yola East LGA is hindered by systemic issues such as lack of institutional support, censorship, and security risks. These challenges limit the ability of journalists to effectively expose governance-related malpractices, thereby reducing public trust and accountability. This study seeks to evaluate the influence of investigative journalism on governance transparency in Yola East LGA and identify strategies to address these challenges.
