Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Child labour remains a pervasive challenge in Nigeria, particularly in areas like Suleja LGA, Niger State, where socio-economic pressures compel children into exploitative work conditions. The media plays a critical role in raising awareness, shaping public opinion, and advocating for policy reforms to address this issue (Adebayo & Eze, 2023). Through investigative journalism, public service announcements, and collaborative campaigns with non-governmental organizations, media platforms have highlighted the plight of child labourers while promoting solutions such as access to education and social welfare programs. However, the effectiveness of these efforts often depends on the consistency, depth, and accessibility of media coverage (Yusuf, 2024). In Suleja, where cultural and economic factors contribute to the normalization of child labour, the media's ability to influence societal attitudes and policymaking is particularly critical. This study explores the strategies employed by media outlets to combat child labour in Suleja, assessing their impact on awareness, advocacy, and intervention.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite increased attention to child labour in Nigeria, the prevalence of this issue in Suleja LGA indicates gaps in awareness and enforcement of protective measures. The media, which has the potential to drive change, often struggles with limited resources, competing priorities, and resistance from communities that view child labour as a necessity (Nwachukwu, 2023). Furthermore, questions remain about the extent to which media campaigns have translated into tangible policy changes or reductions in child labour practices. This research addresses these challenges by investigating the role of media in combating child labour in Suleja, identifying both successes and areas for improvement.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the role of media in raising awareness about child labour in Suleja LGA.
  2. To assess the effectiveness of media campaigns in influencing public attitudes and policymaking.
  3. To identify strategies for enhancing media-driven advocacy against child labour.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. What role does the media play in raising awareness about child labour in Suleja LGA?
  2. How effective are media campaigns in influencing public attitudes and policymaking?
  3. What strategies can improve media-driven advocacy against child labour?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. H0: Media efforts do not significantly impact awareness of child labour in Suleja LGA.
  2. H1: Media campaigns positively influence public attitudes toward reducing child labour.
  3. H2: Enhanced collaboration between media and advocacy groups can improve efforts to combat child labour.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study highlights the critical role of media in addressing child labour, providing valuable insights for journalists, policymakers, and advocacy organizations. By focusing on Suleja LGA, it offers a localized perspective on the challenges and opportunities for media-driven interventions. The findings will inform strategies to strengthen media advocacy, enhance public awareness, and promote policy changes aimed at eradicating child labour in the region.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to examining the role of media in combating child labour within Suleja LGA, Niger State, without extending to other LGAs or related child welfare issues.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Child Labour: Work that deprives children of their childhood, education, and well-being, often under exploitative conditions.
  • Media Advocacy: The use of media platforms to promote social change and influence policy decisions.
  • Awareness Campaigns: Organized efforts to inform the public about specific issues, challenges, or solutions.
