Background of the Study
Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are vital contributors to economic growth, employment, and innovation. However, taxation significantly affects their financial performance, particularly in developing regions like Argungu LGA. The financial burden of taxes can influence SMEs' profitability, reinvestment capacity, and overall growth. While taxation generates revenue for public services, excessive or poorly structured tax systems can hinder SMEs’ operations, discouraging expansion and innovation.

In Argungu LGA, where SMEs form a substantial part of the local economy, understanding the impact of taxation on their financial performance is crucial. A well-balanced tax system can promote SME sustainability, while an overly burdensome one can lead to financial instability. This study investigates how taxation influences the financial performance of SMEs in Argungu LGA.

Statement of the Problem
SMEs in Argungu LGA face challenges such as high tax rates, multiple levies, and compliance costs, which adversely affect their financial performance. The lack of research addressing the link between taxation and SME profitability in the region necessitates this study.

Aim and Objectives of the Study

  • To assess the impact of taxation on SMEs’ financial performance in Argungu LGA.
  • To identify specific tax-related challenges affecting SMEs in Argungu LGA.
  • To propose strategies for mitigating the financial burden of taxation on SMEs.

Research Questions

  1. How does taxation affect SMEs’ financial performance in Argungu LGA?
  2. What tax-related challenges do SMEs face in Argungu LGA?
  3. What strategies can mitigate the financial burden of taxation on SMEs?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Taxation has no significant impact on SMEs’ financial performance in Argungu LGA.
  2. Tax-related challenges do not significantly affect SMEs’ profitability.
  3. Proposed strategies do not significantly reduce the financial burden of taxation.

Significance of the Study
The study provides insights into the relationship between taxation and SME financial performance in Argungu LGA, aiding policymakers in designing SME-friendly tax policies.

Scope and Limitation of the Study
The study focuses on SMEs in Argungu LGA, examining how taxation influences their financial performance. Limitations include variability in tax compliance levels and access to financial data.
