Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Event anchoring is a critical element in ensuring the success of events by creating a seamless flow and fostering audience engagement. Event anchors, also known as emcees or moderators, play a pivotal role in setting the tone, maintaining the event's pace, and ensuring that participants remain actively involved throughout the program. In Wukari Local Government Area, traditional and modern events, such as festivals, ceremonies, and social gatherings, often rely on skilled anchors to bridge the gap between the audience and event organizers. According to Olawale and Ibrahim (2024), effective event anchoring is characterized by dynamic communication skills, cultural awareness, and the ability to adapt to the audience's mood and expectations. This study explores how event anchors influence audience engagement in Wukari LGA and their contribution to the overall success of events.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the significance of event anchors in ensuring successful events, their role is often undervalued, leading to inadequate preparation and selection processes. In Wukari LGA, challenges such as poor training, cultural insensitivity, and a lack of understanding of audience dynamics have hindered the effectiveness of anchors in driving audience engagement. Furthermore, many events fail to allocate sufficient resources to hire skilled professionals, resulting in poorly coordinated programs and disengaged audiences. This study aims to evaluate the role of event anchors in enhancing audience engagement and identify ways to improve their effectiveness in Wukari LGA.
