Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Traditional festivals are vital for preserving and promoting cultural heritage. In Argungu Local Government Area, Kebbi State, the renowned Argungu Fishing Festival serves as a significant cultural event that showcases local traditions, customs, and history. These festivals provide a platform for intergenerational knowledge transfer, community bonding, and economic development through tourism. According to Musa and Abdullahi (2020), traditional festivals not only preserve cultural heritage but also strengthen community identity and pride. This study explores the role of traditional festivals in preserving cultural heritage in Argungu, focusing on their significance and challenges.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the cultural and economic importance of traditional festivals, many are threatened by modernization, declining participation, and inadequate funding. In Argungu, the survival of traditional festivals is further challenged by changing societal values and limited documentation of cultural practices. This study investigates the role of traditional festivals in preserving cultural heritage and addresses the challenges they face.
