Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Mega events, characterized by their large scale and significant economic, social, and cultural impacts, have become crucial in fostering community engagement and development. Stakeholder collaboration, which involves the active participation of governments, private organizations, local communities, and other relevant parties, is vital for the successful planning and execution of such events. In Makurdi LGA, a hub of cultural and economic activities, mega events such as festivals, trade fairs, and sports competitions play a critical role in boosting tourism and local development. However, the complexity of organizing these events often necessitates the collaboration of multiple stakeholders to ensure adequate resources, logistical efficiency, and widespread community support. This study aims to examine the influence of stakeholder collaboration on the success of mega events in Makurdi LGA, focusing on the strategies employed and the challenges encountered.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the potential of mega events to drive economic and social growth, their success in Makurdi LGA is often hindered by inadequate stakeholder collaboration. Issues such as poor communication, conflicting interests, and a lack of coordinated efforts can lead to logistical challenges, financial constraints, and limited public engagement. These shortcomings not only affect the overall success of mega events but also diminish their long-term impact on community development. This study seeks to explore the extent to which effective stakeholder collaboration contributes to the success of mega events and identifies barriers that impede such cooperation in Makurdi LGA.
