Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Infant mortality is a critical indicator of public health and societal development. In Hong LGA, Adamawa State, the prevalence of preventable diseases, inadequate healthcare access, and socio-economic challenges contribute to high infant mortality rates. Public relations (PR) serves as a powerful tool in addressing these issues by creating awareness, promoting healthcare services, and encouraging behavioral change. Through targeted messaging and community engagement, PR campaigns can educate caregivers about immunization, nutrition, and hygiene practices. Research highlights the significant impact of PR strategies in improving child health outcomes, particularly in underserved regions (Bello & Umar, 2024).

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite interventions aimed at reducing infant mortality in Hong LGA, many families remain unaware of life-saving practices and healthcare services. Poor communication between healthcare providers and communities further exacerbates the issue. This study investigates how PR can effectively address these gaps and contribute to lowering infant mortality rates.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the role of PR in reducing infant mortality rates in Hong LGA.
  2. To identify effective PR strategies for promoting infant health.
  3. To evaluate the challenges faced in implementing PR campaigns for infant mortality reduction.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How does PR contribute to reducing infant mortality rates in Hong LGA?
  2. What PR strategies are most effective in promoting infant health?
  3. What challenges affect the implementation of PR campaigns for infant mortality reduction?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. H0: PR does not significantly reduce infant mortality rates in Hong LGA.
  2. H1: Effective PR strategies improve awareness and adoption of infant health practices.
  3. H2: Addressing challenges enhances the success of PR campaigns in reducing infant mortality.

1.6 Significance of the Study
The study offers valuable insights into the role of PR in combating infant mortality. It provides evidence-based recommendations for healthcare agencies, NGOs, and PR professionals to design impactful campaigns that improve child survival rates in Hong LGA.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on the application of PR in reducing infant mortality within Hong LGA, Adamawa State, excluding other health or developmental issues.
