Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Access to clean drinking water is fundamental to public health, economic growth, and environmental sustainability. In Chanchaga LGA, Niger State, challenges such as water pollution, limited infrastructure, and poor maintenance of facilities have hindered access to safe drinking water. Public relations (PR) plays a critical role in addressing these issues through advocacy, community mobilization, and stakeholder engagement. By leveraging strategic communication, PR initiatives can increase public awareness of water hygiene, encourage policy interventions, and promote collaborative efforts to ensure equitable access to clean water. Recent studies underscore the effectiveness of PR in advancing water management solutions and driving behavioral change (Ahmed & Musa, 2023).

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the efforts of government agencies and non-governmental organizations, access to clean drinking water remains a persistent challenge in Chanchaga LGA. The lack of adequate awareness campaigns, insufficient stakeholder involvement, and limited public participation exacerbate the problem. This study investigates the role of PR in bridging these gaps and facilitating sustainable access to clean drinking water.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the role of PR in creating awareness about clean drinking water in Chanchaga LGA.
  2. To identify effective PR strategies for promoting water hygiene and conservation.
  3. To assess the challenges faced in implementing PR campaigns for clean drinking water initiatives.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How does PR create awareness about clean drinking water in Chanchaga LGA?
  2. What PR strategies effectively promote water hygiene and conservation?
  3. What challenges affect the success of PR campaigns for clean water initiatives?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. H0: PR has no significant impact on public awareness of clean drinking water in Chanchaga LGA.
  2. H1: PR strategies positively influence water hygiene and conservation practices.
  3. H2: Addressing implementation challenges improves the effectiveness of PR campaigns for clean water access.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study provides valuable insights into the role of PR in addressing water-related challenges in Chanchaga LGA. Its findings will guide policymakers, development organizations, and PR practitioners in designing and implementing effective communication strategies to improve access to clean drinking water.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on the role of PR in facilitating access to clean drinking water in Chanchaga LGA, Niger State, and does not extend to broader water resource management issues.
