Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Mental health is a crucial component of overall well-being, yet it remains stigmatized and misunderstood in many communities, including Zaria LGA, Kaduna State. Public relations (PR) serves as a powerful tool for creating awareness about mental health, challenging stereotypes, and encouraging individuals to seek help. Through targeted campaigns, media advocacy, and stakeholder engagement, PR initiatives can address societal misconceptions and foster a supportive environment for mental health interventions. Recent research highlights the effectiveness of PR in driving mental health awareness and promoting access to care in underserved regions (Adewumi & Okonkwo, 2024).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite increasing global attention to mental health, Zaria LGA faces challenges such as stigma, inadequate resources, and limited public awareness. These issues hinder efforts to address mental health concerns and provide necessary support services. This study investigates the role of PR in raising awareness, reducing stigma, and promoting mental health education in the area.
