Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Cultural events have long been recognized as powerful platforms for fostering inter-ethnic harmony, especially in multi-ethnic societies such as Nigeria. These events serve as avenues for showcasing the rich and diverse cultural heritage of various ethnic groups, promoting mutual understanding, respect, and unity. In Katsina Local Government Area, cultural festivals, including traditional dance performances, music events, and arts exhibitions, play a vital role in bridging the gap between different ethnic communities. According to recent studies, cultural events create shared experiences that encourage dialogue and reduce tensions in ethnically diverse societies (Ibrahim & Suleiman, 2023; Musa et al., 2024). However, the potential of these events to promote inter-ethnic harmony is often underutilized due to inadequate planning, funding, and political interference. This study explores how cultural events in Katsina LGA can effectively promote inter-ethnic harmony, analyzing their contributions to fostering unity and addressing challenges that hinder their success.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the significance of cultural events in fostering inter-ethnic harmony, Katsina LGA continues to experience sporadic ethnic tensions, often fueled by mistrust and misunderstanding among its diverse ethnic groups. The potential of cultural events to promote unity remains untapped due to insufficient collaboration among organizers, lack of representation of all ethnic groups, and inadequate public participation. Additionally, the absence of strategic efforts to use cultural events as tools for peacebuilding limits their impact. This study addresses these issues by investigating the role of cultural events in promoting inter-ethnic harmony in Katsina LGA and identifying ways to enhance their effectiveness.
