Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Social media has become a dominant platform for information dissemination, but it is also a breeding ground for misinformation, which can lead to public panic, reputational damage, and societal unrest. In Ilorin West Local Government Area (LGA), Kwara State, the prevalence of misinformation on social media has posed significant challenges for individuals, organizations, and public institutions. Public relations (PR) is instrumental in managing misinformation by promoting accurate information, debunking false narratives, and fostering digital literacy. According to Okeke and Adeyemi (2023), effective PR strategies, such as real-time communication and fact-checking, are critical in combating misinformation. This study explores PR strategies for managing social media misinformation in Ilorin West LGA.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
The spread of misinformation on social media in Ilorin West LGA has resulted in reputational harm to individuals and institutions, as well as public confusion. Despite efforts to address this issue, the effectiveness of PR strategies in managing social media misinformation remains underexplored. This study investigates how PR can combat misinformation and promote accurate information in Ilorin West LGA.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the role of PR in managing social media misinformation in Ilorin West LGA.
  2. To identify challenges faced by PR practitioners in combating misinformation.
  3. To propose effective PR strategies for managing misinformation on social media in Ilorin West LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. PR strategies significantly reduce the spread of misinformation on social media in Ilorin West LGA.
  2. Challenges such as resource constraints and limited digital literacy hinder PR effectiveness in managing misinformation.
  3. Enhanced PR strategies can effectively combat social media misinformation in Ilorin West LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study provides practical insights for PR practitioners, organizations, and policymakers on managing social media misinformation. It contributes to the development of effective communication strategies for promoting accurate information in Ilorin West LGA.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
