Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Election reporting is one of the most critical functions of journalism, particularly in democratic societies. In Ankpa LGA, Kogi State, the media plays a pivotal role in informing the electorate about candidates, policies, and the electoral process. Ethical journalism during elections ensures transparency, accuracy, and impartiality, fostering public trust and promoting free and fair elections. However, unethical practices such as bias, sensationalism, and misinformation often undermine the credibility of election reporting. The perception of the public regarding the ethical standards of journalists can significantly influence the trust and reliance placed on media reports during elections (Obaje & Salifu, 2024).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The effectiveness of election reporting is often questioned when public perception of journalistic ethics is low. In Ankpa LGA, allegations of bias, political influence, and insufficient verification of facts have raised concerns about the credibility of election coverage. These issues not only affect public trust in the media but also impact the democratic process. This study investigates public perceptions of ethical standards in election reporting in Ankpa LGA, highlighting challenges and suggesting ways to improve journalistic practices.
