Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
The preservation of indigenous languages is crucial for maintaining cultural heritage, identity, and diversity. In Sokoto South LGA, where languages like Hausa and Fulfulde thrive, local media serve as powerful tools for promoting linguistic preservation and literacy. Radio programs, television broadcasts, and community newspapers in indigenous languages foster inclusivity and encourage intergenerational language transfer. However, the dominance of English and other global languages in media content poses a threat to local languages, necessitating deliberate efforts to promote indigenous linguistic practices (Aliyu & Musa, 2024).

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the cultural significance of indigenous languages, their representation in local media in Sokoto South LGA remains limited. Challenges such as inadequate funding, lack of trained personnel, and the prioritization of global languages contribute to the gradual erosion of these languages. This study explores the role of local media in promoting indigenous languages and examines the barriers to effective implementation.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the role of local media in promoting indigenous languages in Sokoto South LGA.
  2. To identify challenges faced by local media in indigenous language promotion.
  3. To propose strategies for enhancing the use of indigenous languages in media content.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How do local media contribute to the promotion of indigenous languages in Sokoto South LGA?
  2. What challenges hinder the effective use of indigenous languages in local media?
  3. What strategies can improve the promotion of indigenous languages through local media?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. H0: Local media do not significantly influence the promotion of indigenous languages in Sokoto South LGA.
  2. H1: Increased indigenous language programming enhances community engagement.
  3. H2: Providing training and resources for media personnel improves indigenous language promotion.

1.6 Significance of the Study
The study highlights the importance of local media in preserving linguistic heritage and promoting cultural identity in Sokoto South LGA. Its findings will benefit media practitioners, educators, and policymakers in fostering inclusive communication.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is confined to the role of local media in promoting indigenous languages in Sokoto South LGA, without addressing broader national or global linguistic issues.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Local Media: Media outlets that serve a specific community or region, such as local radio and newspapers.
