Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
The preservation of indigenous languages is crucial for maintaining cultural heritage, identity, and diversity. In Sokoto South LGA, where languages like Hausa and Fulfulde thrive, local media serve as powerful tools for promoting linguistic preservation and literacy. Radio programs, television broadcasts, and community newspapers in indigenous languages foster inclusivity and encourage intergenerational language transfer. However, the dominance of English and other global languages in media content poses a threat to local languages, necessitating deliberate efforts to promote indigenous linguistic practices (Aliyu & Musa, 2024).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the cultural significance of indigenous languages, their representation in local media in Sokoto South LGA remains limited. Challenges such as inadequate funding, lack of trained personnel, and the prioritization of global languages contribute to the gradual erosion of these languages. This study explores the role of local media in promoting indigenous languages and examines the barriers to effective implementation.
