Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Social media journalism has transformed the way information is disseminated and consumed, particularly on critical global issues such as climate change. Platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram provide real-time updates and allow journalists to reach diverse audiences, including those in remote areas like Bauchi LGA, Bauchi State. Climate change, characterized by rising temperatures, erratic rainfall, and desertification, poses severe risks to agriculture and livelihoods in Bauchi. Social media journalism can bridge information gaps, promote awareness, and inspire collective action to mitigate its effects. However, challenges like misinformation, digital illiteracy, and inconsistent internet access hinder its full potential (Audu & Hassan, 2024).

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the increasing use of social media for news dissemination, public awareness of climate change in Bauchi LGA remains low. This gap may be attributed to limited access to reliable content, language barriers, and the proliferation of unverified information. This study examines how social media journalism impacts public understanding of climate change in Bauchi LGA, identifying barriers and proposing solutions to enhance its effectiveness.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of social media journalism on public awareness of climate change in Bauchi LGA.
  2. To identify challenges affecting the effectiveness of social media journalism in promoting climate change awareness.
  3. To recommend strategies for leveraging social media to improve climate change communication.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How does social media journalism influence public awareness of climate change in Bauchi LGA?
  2. What challenges hinder the effectiveness of social media journalism in climate change advocacy?
  3. What strategies can enhance the role of social media in climate change awareness?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. H0: Social media journalism does not significantly influence public awareness of climate change in Bauchi LGA.
  2. H1: Increased access to reliable social media content improves climate change awareness.
  3. H2: Collaborative campaigns between journalists and environmental organizations enhance the effectiveness of social media advocacy.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study provides insights into the potential of social media journalism to improve climate change awareness in Bauchi LGA. It offers practical recommendations for journalists, environmental organizations, and policymakers to harness social media effectively for climate advocacy.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to the impact of social media journalism on climate change awareness in Bauchi LGA, focusing on the local population's access to and interpretation of such information.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
