Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Social media journalism has transformed the way information is disseminated and consumed, particularly on critical global issues such as climate change. Platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram provide real-time updates and allow journalists to reach diverse audiences, including those in remote areas like Bauchi LGA, Bauchi State. Climate change, characterized by rising temperatures, erratic rainfall, and desertification, poses severe risks to agriculture and livelihoods in Bauchi. Social media journalism can bridge information gaps, promote awareness, and inspire collective action to mitigate its effects. However, challenges like misinformation, digital illiteracy, and inconsistent internet access hinder its full potential (Audu & Hassan, 2024).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the increasing use of social media for news dissemination, public awareness of climate change in Bauchi LGA remains low. This gap may be attributed to limited access to reliable content, language barriers, and the proliferation of unverified information. This study examines how social media journalism impacts public understanding of climate change in Bauchi LGA, identifying barriers and proposing solutions to enhance its effectiveness.
