Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Environmental protection has emerged as a pressing global concern, and media advocacy plays a crucial role in raising awareness, influencing public opinion, and driving policy changes. In Makurdi LGA, Benue State, environmental challenges such as deforestation, waste mismanagement, and flooding have severely impacted livelihoods and biodiversity. The media, particularly local outlets, serve as critical tools for advocacy by highlighting these issues and encouraging community and governmental action. Through campaigns, investigative reporting, and public service announcements, the media can bridge the gap between policymakers and citizens, fostering a collective effort toward sustainable environmental practices (Ajayi & Oche, 2024).

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of media advocacy, environmental issues in Makurdi LGA often receive limited and inconsistent attention. This neglect is attributed to factors such as insufficient journalist training on environmental reporting, a lack of financial resources, and limited collaboration with environmental experts. This study seeks to explore the role of media advocacy in promoting environmental protection in Makurdi, identifying challenges and opportunities for improvement.
