Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Mental health has become a global priority, with growing recognition of its profound impact on individual well-being and societal productivity. In Nigeria, addressing mental health challenges remains daunting, with stigma, misinformation, and inadequate services limiting access to care. In Yola South LGA, Adamawa State, public awareness of mental health services is alarmingly low, compounded by cultural misconceptions and limited resources. Public Relations (PR) plays a critical role in bridging this gap by utilizing strategic communication to educate, engage, and influence public perceptions. Effective PR campaigns leverage traditional and digital media platforms, community advocacy, and partnerships with healthcare professionals to promote mental health literacy and reduce stigma. Recent studies emphasize the importance of targeted communication in fostering acceptance of mental health services (Johnson & Ahmed, 2023; Iwuoha, 2024). By highlighting success stories, hosting educational seminars, and involving local influencers, PR can dismantle barriers to mental health care, ultimately improving access and outcomes in Yola South.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing recognition of mental health's importance, awareness of mental health services remains insufficient in Yola South LGA. Challenges such as cultural stigma, lack of targeted education, and misconceptions about mental illnesses deter individuals from seeking help. Additionally, healthcare providers struggle with low community engagement, which further exacerbates the gap between available services and public needs. PR, which has the potential to reshape perceptions and promote mental health services, has been underutilized in this region. Without effective PR strategies, efforts to enhance mental health awareness risk stagnation. This study investigates the role of PR in promoting awareness of mental health services in Yola South LGA, addressing the critical need for strategic communication in healthcare advocacy.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is pivotal in highlighting the role of PR in healthcare advocacy, particularly in promoting mental health awareness in Yola South LGA. By identifying effective communication strategies, the research will aid healthcare providers, policymakers, and PR practitioners in designing targeted campaigns that resonate with the community. Additionally, the study contributes to academic discourse by addressing the intersection of PR and mental health, offering insights into how strategic communication can dismantle stigma and foster inclusivity. The findings will also benefit non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and local governments aiming to improve mental health services and outreach efforts, ultimately enhancing the overall well-being of residents in Yola South LGA.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to examining the role of PR in promoting mental health awareness in Yola South LGA, Adamawa State. It focuses on the strategies employed within the region and does not extend to broader national policies or healthcare infrastructure.
