Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Citizen journalism, characterized by the active participation of ordinary citizens in reporting news through blogs, social media, and other digital platforms, has reshaped the media landscape. In Katsina Central LGA, Katsina State, the rise of citizen journalism has significantly influenced how news is gathered, disseminated, and consumed. While it provides real-time updates and diverse perspectives, it often raises concerns about credibility due to the lack of professional standards, fact-checking, and ethical practices. This dual impact on media credibility underscores the need to examine the dynamics between citizen journalism and traditional media, exploring how both can coexist to enhance information quality and trust (Abubakar & Suleiman, 2024).

1.2 Statement of the Problem
The proliferation of citizen journalism in Katsina Central LGA has challenged traditional media's dominance while also raising concerns about misinformation and trust. Unverified reports by citizen journalists can undermine the credibility of media as a whole, affecting public trust. However, when done responsibly, citizen journalism can complement traditional media by providing grassroots perspectives. This study investigates the impact of citizen journalism on media credibility in Katsina Central, focusing on its challenges and potential contributions.
